Thanks community MX

Thanks to the team macromedia folks that are making my transition to CSS painless. I had been putting off the real CSS styling and have continued to use tables to avoid unfamiliar ground. I'm having such a great time with CSS positioning that every time I see some of my old code, I just want to rip it up and start over.

Welcome

Good things in life?

Years ago I was a stay at home mother who hated to be home. I was always dreaming of the perfect job and of course the perfect family and way of life. A decade ago, I fell in love with the internet then and started learning more about it. Now, most everything I do revolves around the internet and in this information age. well who can't live without it right?
I do feel there's a downside to this way of living for me. My family life is suffering, I can't remember the last time that I took PomPom (my Pomeranian) on a good walk, now the snow is blanketing the ground and it's hard on his old paws. I can't remember the last time I didn't set the 30 minute timer before I sat down with my daughters to read a book. If I am sitting with my husband watching a movie in my living room and sitting by the fireplace when it's cold, I can't wait for the movie to be over so I can see the training available on lynda.com that I just found out about at Max. I am definately missing the good things in life here. Should I be blaming the internet? I eat and breathe web development, I do it for fun, I do it for work and I use it to study. Anyone out there with suggestions? I know I have to devote more time with my family and less time plugged in.

New challenges

Over the past week I have been working non-stop on the interactive timeline for the history of adult education in the U.S. for the college of education. This has been a very interesting project that if I had not stopped trying to make it work with web services data into Flash, I could have save myself some headaches. The project was finally completed using server side coldfusion to bring in the data into a nice visual interface that lets you navigate through the time periods and get details on the events. In addition, students can enter new time events. Anyhow, I am so relieved that I was able to complete this as there are other "big projects" I'm starting this semester.

Philosophy Class

Yes, I enrolled in a philosophy class! So far, I'm having lots of fun. I figure I need this and my husband agrees. All I do is read technical books and use my laptop every waking hour. It is time to think about something else! Like writing a paper about "What I think is truth in my life". I have a blog to the rescue when it comes to putting my thoughts together. But wait, I'm still using the laptop! There's no hope! I might have to take a scuba diving class or a dancing class next time! I hear the Salsa classes are excellent.

Libby's Website

Libby Roderick's website was a joy to design! Along with my husband's photography and Sally's awesome garden shots, we integrated a Flash slide show that shows nature at its best. Lots of caring went into putting this site together to capture Libby's essence! Technically, I owe lots of the tricks and tips to the folks at community MX for the awesome CSS coding shortcuts and their jumpstart examples. It made this project come to reality faster than I imagined!

College of Education

The college of education website is almost completed. CSS front end and Coldfusion / dynamic admin system will allow for easy maintenance. Heavy use of Coldfusion components and application.cfm as the control point.

Along came a CMX Jumpstart

I volunteered to develop my Church's website. It features a custom content management system in the back-end for easy editing built with Coldfusion. It also has the free ColdCalendar application that was customized to include a separate admin and a nice flash slide show extension for the family albums. The front-end is a different story, I wanted to practice more CSS. I had a great experience after the UAA staff development day website and I wanted to build up on that. Unfortunately, I have no time to spend debugging CSS and doing all the testing. I have to say that I love to volunteer but hey, I consider cmx jumpstarts a blessing in this case. It practically took me only two hours to customize the front end and deploy the site's look and feel.
